Gold From
How to distinguish gold from gold plated jewelry?

I try to learn to distinguish solid 10K, 14k, 18K gold jewelry from gold plated or gold filled jewelry. What is the method?

The lack of a hallmark (10k, 14k, 18k etc.) is not indicative of whether your piece is gold or not. In the United States it is against the FTC’s regulations for the jeweler to hallmark a piece of jewelry unless it is accompanied by a maker’s mark. So, when I first began making jewelry and did not have a trademark of my own, I did not hallmark my jewelry. Now that I have a maker’s mark, I hallmark my jewelry with the appropriate metal hallmark and my maker’s mark.

A jeweler cannot just look at a piece and tell you for certain whether it is gold or not; the jeweler will do a test to determine it.

To be scientfically accurate a sample of the metal in question must be assayed in a testing laboratory, but the following two tests have been used for many years and often are sufficiently accurate for a craftsperson or the owner of the metal in question.

To answer “Is It Gold?”:

With a small file, make a scratch in an inconspicuous spot. While wearing rubber gloves, use a wooden, glass or plastic stick to apply a drop of nitric acid to the filed spot. Observe the reaction. When done, rinse everything well in running water.

If there is no reaction, it’s gold.
If there’s a bright green reaction, it’s base metal.
If there’s green in the scratch, it’s a gold layer over base metal (goldplate, or–if the layer of gold is thick enough–goldfilled).
If there’s a milky reaction in the scratch, it’s a gold layer over silver.

To answer “What Karat Is It?”

Determining karat requires a testing kit containing nitric acid, aqua regia, samples of known karat, and a touchstone of slate or ceramic.

The gold object to be tested is rubbed on the stone (“touched”) to leave a streak. A parallel line is made with one of the test pieces of known karat. Both marks are flooded with acid and the reaction are observed. When the sample colors at the same rate as the test streak, a match has been made. Nitric acid is used for low karat golds; aqua regia is needed for higher karats.

Please note: these tests are for your information only. They are not accurate enough to rely upon when representing a piece for sale. Most jewelers have testing kits to use when determining if something is gold or not and its approximate karat. It is probably easiest to take the item to a jeweler than to set up the testing kits yourself.

“Better music through science” was the Epic Records-coined slogan that Boston leader Tom Scholz hated, but this masterwork of studio-happy, high-school-parking-lot music earned it. ''Now I ain't sayin' she's a gold digger'': African American femininities in rap music lyrics.

”Now I ain’t sayin’ she’s a gold digger”: African American femininities in rap music lyrics.

$49.99

This dissertation reports the results of a study about representations of (Black) women, sexuality, and gender relations in rap music lyrics. I explore the extent to which rap music lyrics reproduce or challenge gendered, racialized, and sexual stereotypes of African American women. I ask how men rappers differ from women rappers in depicting (Black) women and themselves. I show what qualities or practices, particularly sexual qualities and practices, are considered as feminine or womanly in rap music and hip-hop culture and how these qualities and practices are similar to or differ from mainstream gender hegemony. I examine whether and how rap music lyrics construct a hierarchical and complementary relationship between (Black) masculinity and femininity. I ask which feminine meanings and practices are treated as “pariah femininities” and point to features of hegemonic masculinity in hip-hop culture and the broader African American community. Finally, I ask whether and how gendering practices represented in rap music lyrics constitute resistant femininities and challenge White and middle-class gender hegemony.;I created a database of rap songs on platinum albums with an original release date of 1984 through 2000. I randomly selected 450 songs from the sampling frame for content analysis. In general, I find that rap music both reproduces and contests prevailing gender, race, class and sexual ideologies and social structures. My analysis of rap lyrics suggests that many male rappers depict (Black) women as promiscuous sexual “freaks” and “bitches” who have sex with men for money and/or other material goods. In many lyrics, they describe their desire for and engagement in sexual activities with freaks and bitches, but they do not express respect. Some women rappers reproduce gendered and racialized stereotypes in their lyrics as well. Still, other women and men rappers challenge these negative images in their songs and offer alternatives. Instead of calling for a

Edward George Dyson (1865-1931) was an Australian poet, journalist and short story writer. At 19 he began writing verse, and a few years later embarked on a life of free-lance journalism which lasted until his death. His first notable work was The Golden Shanty, which appeared in the Bulletin, and many other short stories followed. In 1896 he published a volume of poems, Rhymes from the Mines, and in 1898 the first collection of his short stories, Below and On Top. In 1901 his first long story The Gold-Stealers was published in London, which was followed by In the Roaring Fifties in 1906. In the same year appeared Fact’ry ‘Ands, a series of more or less connected sketches dealing with factory life in Melbourne in a vein of humour. Various other stories and collections of stories were published in the Bookstall Series and will be found listed in Miller’s Australian Literature. Another volume of verse ‘Hello, Soldier! ‘ appeared in 1919.

The Claddagh RingThe Irish Claddagh Rings are probably the most culturally rich pieces of jewelry ever recorded in history. The meaning, significance and history of the Claddagh ring has a rich ancient past that dates back to over 300 years.A small fishing village in Galway, Ireland called the Claddagh was where the tradition of the Claddagh rings first started. The word Claddagh itself comes from the Irish term ‘An Cladach’ that means a ‘flat stony shore’. The crown symbolizes Loyalty, the heart – Love and the hands represent Friendship. The meaning and significance of the Claddagh ring is not just in the crown, heart and clasping hands, it also extends to the hand on which the ring is worn and the direction in which the crown on the ring points. 101 Forgotten Pop Hits of the 1980s

$14.83

The 1980s was a memorable decade for music. Many of the biggest hits from the era are now regarded as modern standards, played at weddings, parties and on radio stations the world over.Whilst the decade threw up some of the most iconic artists and well-recognised songs in music history, it also produced hundreds of hidden gems; songs which were big hits at the time but have not enjoyed the same level of radio airplay and exposure over the last quarter of a century.101 Forgotten Pop Hits of the 1980s aims to remedy this and to jog the nation’s memory about all those fantastic pop records of the decade that have been criminally sidelined through the passing of time. With twelve number One singles and over eighty further top Ten hits included, this book champions those silver and gold selling records, none of which are obscure and all of which deserve their place in the 1980’s Pop Hall of Fame. From sharing cigarettes with Johnny Hates Jazz in the car park of the NEC to appearing on the same bill as Tony Hadley, Nick Parkhouse spent two years meeting and interviewing the artists, performers, musicians, writers and producers that shaped the pop landscape of the decade. 101 Forgotten Pop Hits of the 1980s is the definitive guide to the great music that inspired a generation.

Excerpt: Byd-in ) is a Buddhist temple in the city of Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is jointly a temple of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land) and Tendai sects. This temple was originally built in 998 in the Heian period as a rural villa of Fujiwara no Michinaga, one of the most powerful members of the Fujiwara clan. This villa was changed to a Buddhist temple by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1052. The most famous building in the temple is the Phoenix Hall ( h-d) or the Amida Hall, constructed in 1053. It is the only remaining original building, surrounded by a scenic pond; additional buildings making up the compound were burnt down during a civil war in 1336. The main building in Byd-in, the Phoenix Hall consists of a central hall, flanked by twin wing corridors on both sides of the central hall, and a tail corridor. The central hall houses an image of Amida Buddha. The roof of the hall displays statues of the Chinese phoenix, called h in Japanese. The Phoenix Hall, completed in 1053, is the exemplar of Fujiwara Amida halls. It consists of a main rectangular structure flanked by two L-shaped wing corridors and a tail corridor, set at the edge of a large artificial pond. Though its official name is Amida-d, it began to be called H-d, or Phoenix Hall, in the beginning of the Edo period. This name is considered to derive both from the building’s likeness to a phoenix with outstretched wings and a tail, and the pair of phoenixes adorning the roof. Inside the Phoenix Hall, a single image of Amida (c. 1053) is installed on a high platform. The Amida sculpture is made of Japanese cypress and is covered with gold leaf. It was executed by Jch, who used a new canon of proportions and a new technique, yosegi, in which multiple pieces of wood are carved out like shells and… More:

Celtic knots are perhaps the most notorious and recognizable artwork in Celtic history.
They started appearing in history after about 450 AD.

The Celtic knot symbol, is also referred to as the mystic knot, or the endless knot. The more esoteric or spiritual meaning of this symbol alludes to beginnings and endings. In viewing these beautiful knots, we cannot see a beginning or and end, and therefore we are reminded of the timeless nature of our spirit.

Due to it’s infinite path, the Celtic knot can represent an uninterrupted life cycle. Some may use this symbol as a charm of sorts – warding against sickness or setbacks that might interfere with an otherwise calm and stable life. In this vein, these knots are used as emblems, which can be found in jewelry, clothing, or home décor. In ancient times, gifts adorned with mystic knots would be given with best wishes of longevity, or luck with new endeavors.

Ancient monks were prolific in their use of the Celtic knot to illustrate the world famous Book of Kells, now housed at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

Excerpt: Reading School is a grammar school in the town of Reading, Berkshire, England. It is a single-sex boys’ school, which selects incoming students on the basis of examined ability, usually at age 11, with a few entrants at age 13 and 16. It is state-funded, so there are no fees for day pupils, and boarders only pay for food and lodgings, not schooling. The current headmaster, since Autumn 2006, is John Weeds, replacing Patricia Daniels, who was acting headteacher for one year, and also the first female headteacher in the 882-year history of the school. Reading is a foundation school, and an OFSTED report concluded that “examination results place the school in the top five per cent nationally”, “Pupils’ attitudes to learning are outstanding” and “The school goes to exceptional lengths to broaden and enrich the education of all pupils”. The 2005 Key Stage 3 results were both the best in the country for value-added and for the average points score of each student. In the 2004 school league tables for England (including fee-paying schools), it came eighth for GCSE-level results (average 602.5 points), 106th for A-level results (average 409.3 points) and 170th for value-added between ages 11 and 16 (score of 1037.7 compared with a baseline of 1000). It has recently become a DFES specialist school for the Humanities, specialising in English, Geography and Classics the first school to specialise in Classics despite entry being selected by Mathematics and verbal and non-verbal logic ability. For accounting purposes, twelve dinheiros equalled one soldo and twenty soldos equal one libra .The first Portuguese coins were issued by the first king, Afonso I . Some time after 1179, he ordered the issue of coins in denominations of half a dinheiro (called a mealha ) and one dinheiro. They were copied from the Spanish dinero and were consequently minted in billon . These circulated alongside Byzantine siliquae and Moorish dirhem and dinar .Around 1200, Sancho I also introduced the gold morabitino (cf. Spanish maravedí ), worth 15 soldos. A century later, in the reign of King Denis , the silver tornês was introduced, worth 5½ soldos. In 1380, King Ferdinand I introduced several new coins. There were gold dobra , worth 6 libras, silver real worth 10 soldos and various billon denominations, some of whose names related to war equipment used by the French who helped Portugal in the war against Castile , such as the pilarte worth seven dinheiros.During the reign of King João I , a new real was introduced, known either as the “real of 3½ libras” or the “real branco “. With a value of 70 soldos, this was to become the unit of account by the beginning of the reign of João I’s successor (King Duarte I ) in 1433.Note that in modern Portuguese , the word “dinheiro” means “money “.Preceded by – : Portuguese currency 1128 – 1433: Succeeded by

Excerpt: Detail of Niccolò da TolentinoThe Battle of San Romano is a set of three paintings by the Florentine painter Paolo Uccello depicting events that took place at the battle of San Romano in 1432. The paintings are in tempera on wooden panels, each over 3 metres long, and were commissioned sometime around 1356 by Cosimo de’ Medici, to decorate the newly built Medici Palace. They are significant as revealing the development of linear perspective in early Italian Renaissance painting, and are unusual as a major secular commission. The paintings were much admired in the 15th century. They are now divided between three collections, the National Gallery, London, the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The three paintings (from left to right) are: The Uffizi panel was probably designed to be the central painting of the triptych and is the only one signed by the artist. The sequence most widely agreed among art historians is: London, Uffizi, Louvre, although others have been proposed. They may represent different times of day: dawn (London), mid-day (Paris) and dusk (Uffizi) – the battle lasted eight hours. In the London painting, Niccolò da Tolentino, with his large gold and red patterned hat, is seen leading the Florentine cavalry. In the foreground, broken lances and a dead soldier are carefully aligned, so as to create an impression of perspective. The three paintings were designed to be hung high on three different walls of a room, and the perspective designed with that height in mind, which accounts for many apparent anomalies in the perspective when seen in photos or at normal gallery height. Many areas of the paintings were covered with gold and silver leaf. While the gold leaf, such as that found on the decorations of the

Excerpt: The Ordre du Croissant (Order of the Crescent ; Italian – Ordine della Luna Crescente ) was a chivalric order founded by Charles I of Naples and Sicily in 1268. It was revived in 1448 or 1464 by René I , king of Jerusalem , Sicily and Aragon (including parts of Provence ), to provide him with a rival to the English Order of the Garter . René was one of the champions of the medieval system of chivalry and knighthood, and this new order was (like its English rival) neo-Arthurian in character. Its insignia consisted of a golden crescent moon engraved in grey with the word LOZ, with a chain of 3 gold loops above the crescent. Excerpt: The Gattilusi were a powerful Genoese family who controlled a number of possessions in the northern Aegean from 1355 until the mid 15th century.Francesco Gattilusio gained the favor of Byzantine Emperor John V Palaiologos by helping him oust a rival to the throne, John VI Kantakouzenos , in 1354. As reward, Gattilusio was given lordship of the island of Lesbos (and its stronghold, Mytilene ) from July 1355, as well as the hand in marriage of the emperor’s sister, Maria. The Gattilusi possessions grew to include, among others, the islands of Imbros , Samothrace , Lemnos and Thasos , and the land city of Aenos (modern Enez in Turkey ). From this position, they were heavily involved in the mining and marketing of alum , useful in textile production and a profitable trade controlled by the Genoese. After the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Gattilusi briefly retained control of their possessions under Ottoman suzerainty , but were forced out within a few years. In 1456, the Ottomans appointed a native Greek historian, Michael Critobulus , as governor of Imbros, and likewise removed the Gattilusi from power in the remainder of their possessions, with the exception of Lesbos, which they were permitted to retain in return for an annual payment of 4,000 gold pieces. The lord of Lesbos, Domenico Gattilusio , was murdered and briefly succeeded by his brother Niccolò , before an Ottoman fleet captured the island in September 1462, sending Niccolò as prisoner to Istanbul (where he was later executed) and putting an end to the family’s power. Archaeological excavations in the castle of Mytilene since 1984 by the University of British Columbia under the direction of Caroline and Hector Williams have uncovered the burial chapel of the Gattelusi and a few graves that probably

The attacking ships were ordered to focus on the Spanish flagship and the Dutch fleet stood into the bay.Van Heemskerk was killed during the first approach on the Spanish flagship as a cannon ball severed his leg. The Dutch effectively then doubled up the galleons (in a move that almost two centuries later was copied by Admiral Nelson during the Battle of the Nile of 1798) and a few of the galleons caught fire. Excerpt: The Bank Restriction Act of 1797 was an Act of the Parliament of Great Britain (37 Geo. III. c. 45) allowing for Bank of England not to have to convert banknotes into gold. An increasing number of people were trading their banknotes for gold. Due to the overprinting of banknotes, the Bank of England was losing its supply of gold, and due to the gold standard, the value of each banknote was diminishing. The banknote was overprinted by the British government after they declared war on revolutionary France in 1793. Due to increasing military expenses, the government began printing more banknotes, which they expected the Bank of England to exchange for gold should the banknote bearer request it. By the end of the war in 1814, the banknotes had a face value of 28.4 million pounds of gold, yet was backed by only 2.2 million pounds of gold, which caused the currency to depreciate by 30%. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9985956

Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Full date unknown Deaths Full date unknown A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The first Wartburg festival (German : Wartburgfest ) on 18 October 1817 was an important event in German history that took place at the Wartburg Castle near Eisenach .After the war of liberation against France and Napoleon , many people were bitter about dreams of German unity shattered after the Congress of Vienna . Democratic reforms were stalled, and governments had cracked down on press freedom and rights of association. In 1815 the students of Jena founded the youth organization Teutonia in order to demonstrate about Germany unity at the university. Many of them had also taken part as voluntary soldiers on the fields against Napoleon, e.g. in the Lützow Free Corps with its black-red-gold colour scheme that was adopted as the Flag of Germany . The German students demonstrated for a national state and a liberal Constitution and condemned reactionary forces in the newly recreated German states. On the occasion of the three-hundredth anniversary of Martin Luther ’s nailing of his theses and the fourth anniversary of the bloody Battle of Nations at Leipzig , the student groups organized a festival at the Wartburg. This castle had been a refuge for Martin Luther. As he translated the bible there and thus set a standard for the German language , it became a symbol of German nationalism .A key event was a book-burning of reactionary literary works, and symbols of Napoleon like a corporal’s cane. This act was used in 1933 as a justification for the Nazi book burnings .The event itself was also used as a justification for further suppression of liberal forces, like the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819.In 1832, the Hambacher Fest was held in similar manner. Segui, Treaty of the Cedars, Saugeen Tract Agreement, Tithe Bill. Excerpt: The Specie Circular (Coinage Act ) was an executive order issued by U.S. President Andrew Jackson in 1836 and carried out by President Martin Van Buren . It required payment for government land to be in gold and silver . History The Act was a reaction to the growing concerns about excessive speculations of land after the Indian removal , which was mostly done with soft currency . The sale of public lands increased five times between 1834 and 1836. Speculators paid for these purchases with depreciating paper money. While government law already demanded that land purchases be completed with specie or paper notes from specie-backed banks, a large portion of buyers used paper money from state banks not backed by hard money. Executive order On July 11, 1836, Jackson ordered Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury to issue the Specie Circular. After August 15, the government refused to take anything but gold and silver specie in exchange for public lands. It did make a special exception to also accept certain types of Virginia scrip . The executive order did allow for legitimate settlers (non-speculators) to use paper until December. Consequences As one of Jackson’s last acts in office, the consequences of the executive order fell mostly on his successor Martin Van Buren . The devaluation of paper currency only increased with Jackson’s proclamation. This sent inflation and prices upwards. Many at the time blamed the Specie Circular for the rise in

Excerpt: The Contagious Diseases Acts were originally passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom in 1864, with further alterations and editions made to it in 1867 and 1869. In 1862, a committee was established to inquire into venereal disease in the armed forces, on its recommendation the first Contagious Diseases Act was passed. The legislation allowed police officers to arrest prostitutes in certain ports and army towns, the women were then subjected to compulsory checks for venereal disease. If a woman was declared to be infected, she would be confined in what was known as a Lock Hospital until cured. The original act was only lawful in a few selected naval ports and army towns, By 1869, the acts had been extended to be in operation in eighteen subjected districts The Act of 1864 stated that women found to be infected could be interned in locked hospitals for up to three months, a period gradually extended to one year with the 1869 Act. These measures were justified by medical and military officials as the most effective method to shield men from venereal disease. As military men were discouraged from marriage and homosexual behaviour was criminal, prostitution was considered a necessary evil. However, no provision was made for the examination of prostitutes’ clientele, which became one of the many points of contention in a campaign to repeal the Acts. After 1867, proposals were introduced to extend the acts to the north of England, and to the civilian popu… More:

In 1815, Britain captured the territory at the Battle of Blaauwberg, setting the scene for an influx of English settlers who were culturally at odds with the exising Dutch population, notably with respect to issues such as the abolishment of slavery. Many Dutch farmers elected to move away from British influence into the hinterland, which resulted in a mass migration known as the Great Trek. As people moved inland, prospecting for minerals started; in the 1870s, the discovery of diamonds in the area of present-day Kimberley was followed a decade later by the discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand. The discoveries led to a massive influx of Uitlanders (Dutch for “foreigners”) into the Boer republics of the Orange Free State and Transvaal. Tensions soon started rising between the British Empire and the two Boer republics. The causes of the war were complex, with contributing factors including the Boers’ desire for independence, the prize of the r… More:

Excerpt: Israel (also Yisroel or Yisrol) Rosenberg (ca. 1850 1903 or 1904; Yiddish/Hebrew: ) founded the first Yiddish theater troupe in Imperial Russia. A personable “hole-and-corner lawyer” (that is, one without a diploma) and swindler in Odessa, Rosenberg was part of the migration of merchants and middlemen to Bucharest, Romania at the start of the Russo-Turkish War in 1887. These merchants and middlemen would prove a crucial component of the audience for the nascent professional Yiddish-language theater, consisting at that time only of a single troupe, that of Abraham Goldfaden. Unlike the rest of the migrants, Rosenberg actually joined the troupe and became an actor. Like many who worked with Goldfaden, he soon chafed under the latter’s imperious style and with his countryman Jacob Spivakovsky, put together his own travelling troupe and set out for the eastern part of Romania. At first they did well, but with the end of the war much of their audience returned to Russia; after running through their money playing in the provinces, they turned up nearly broke in Odessa, where there was a pre-made audience of those who had already seen Yiddish theater in Romania during the recent war. There, in spring 1878, Rosenberg obtained some small backing and formed a troupe including Spivakovsky; Broder singers “Schmul with the Hoarse Throat”, “Boris Budgoy” (Boris Holtzerman), Laizer Duke, Aaron Schrage; Jacob Adler, at that time new to performing; Sophia (Sonya) Oberlander, who later married Adler; and Masha Moskovich, whom Adler in his memoir describes as “a red-gold-haired beauty”; and various others, including singers from a local synagogue choir. The Democrats increased their share of the House, but not by enough to regain control. With a stable economy and no cornerstone issue, Democratic gains can mostly be linked to the affects of redistricting. Many of the new seats were in areas that featured a high number of immigrants, either Eastern and Southern Europeans industrial workers or Northern European farmers. New immigrant groups trended Democratic. The Populist Party disappeared from the House, with its supporters almost unanimously switching to the Democratic Party. Notable freshmen included future Vice President and Speaker John Nance Garner (D-Texas ).Overall results

Excerpt: Salvator (1886-1909) was an American thoroughbred race horse considered by many to be one of the best during the latter half of the 19th Century. Bred by Daniel Swigert of Elmendorf Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, Salvator was sired by Prince Charlie out of Salina (by the great Lexington). (Salvator was the last great horse Swigart would breed; his best stallions had grown old and died as so often happened to stud farms.) On his sire’s side he went back to the tremendous mare Pocahontas by Glencoe. On his dam’s side, through Lexington, he carried the blood of Boston sired by Timoleon sired by Sir Archie sired by Diomed. Unusual for the times, the dark chestnut with a large white blaze was born in 1886 in California. James Ben Ali Haggin had purchased his dam, Salina, and shipped her to his 44,000-acre (180 km) Rancho Del Paso with Salvator in utero. Haggin had made his money in the California Gold Rush of 1849, so much of it he was suddenly one of the wealthiest men in America, and he used his new wealth to establish the biggest horse breeding operation in world history. Aside from the thousands of grazing acres he owned in Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California, he headquartered at the Rancho del Paso near the present day city of Sacramento. He bought breeding horses from every state that bred fine thoroughbreds, as well as shipping them in from Ireland, Australia and England. Eventually he would buy Swigert’s Elmendorf Farm and move his headquarters there and add to it until he held 8,700 acres (35 km) of prime bluegrass. (Over time, and through several owners, this property was eventually broken up into stud farms like Spendthrift Farm, Greentree Stud, and others.) In the fall of 1887, Haggin’s eastern trainer, Matthew … More:

During his career just after World War I, he won 20 of 21 races and $249,465 in purses. By the prominent sire Fair Play, out of the mare Mahubah, Man o’ War was owned and bred by August Belmont, Jr. (1851-1924), whose father’s accomplishments were recognized through the naming of the Belmont Stakes. Belmont Jr. joined the United States Army at age 65 to serve in France during World War I. While he was overseas, his wife named a new foal “Man o’ War” in honor of her husband. However, the Belmonts decided to liquidate their racing stable. At the Saratoga yearling sale in 1918, Man o’ War was sold at a final bid of $5,000 to Samuel D. Excerpt: The Waste Land is a 434-line modernist poem by T. S. Eliot published in 1922. It has been called “one of the most important poems of the 20th century.” Despite what is seen by some as the poem’s obscurity its shifts between satire and prophecy, its abrupt and unannounced changes of speaker, location and time, its elegiac but intimidating summoning up of a vast and dissonant range of cultures and literatures the poem has nonetheless become a familiar touchstone of modern literature. Among its famous phrases are “April is the cruellest month” (its first line); “I will show you fear in a handful of dust”; and (its last line) the mantra in the Sanskrit language “Shantih shantih shantih.” Eliot probably worked on what was to become The Waste Land for several years preceding its first publication in 1922. In a letter to New York lawyer and patron of modernism John Quinn dated 9 May 1921, Eliot wrote that he h… More:

As usual with Colonel Bradley, he named the latest La Troienne foal with a name beginning with B. But since the friend he named him after, John Harris, went by the nickname Abimelech, Bradley had to drop the A. Bimelech was the last colt sired by Bradley’s major stallion , Black Toney , and was a full brother to Black Helen , the 1935 champion three-year-old filly . (Black Toney was also the sire of, among many other exceptional horses, Hall of Famer Black Gold .)Bimelech began his racing career with a bang. Going undefeated as a two-year-old, his first race was a romp over maidens at Suffolk Downs , which he won by three lengths. In his next race, an allowance at Empire City, he wired the field.Bimelech’s first stakes race occurred one month later at Saratoga Race Course . He trounced Briar Sharp and Andy K. in the Saratoga Special Stakes even though he was bumped both at the start and in the stretch. He then went on to win the Hopeful Stakes by a neck.By now, it was obvious to all that Bimelech was quite the race horse. Bimelech ended his first season with a length and a half victory in the Belmont Futurity Stakes and a four length win in the Pimlico Futurity . He was named American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt . He was also the Experimental Free Handicap Highweight at 130 pounds, a prodigious weight for a young horse. With all this, few had doubts he would win the 1940 Kentucky Derby ; so few in fact, that he was made the winterbook favorite at three to one, the

She first appears in World’s Finest Comics #113 (November 1960). When Bonnie was a child, her mother Millie put her to archery training, controlling her progress all the time. Alone in Star City , she eventually becomes inspired by Green Arrow and Speedy and decides to use her skills in a way that counted. It featured the 1962 World Championship of Drivers and the 1962 International Cup for F1 Manufacturers which were contested concurrently over a nine race series that commenced on May 20 and ended on December 29. The season also included a number of non-championship races for Formula One cars. Ferrari were completely eclipsed in 1962, partly as a result of internal upheavals, partly because the British teams had made great progress. BRM finally came good with Graham Hill taking the championship after a season long battle with the revolutionary monocoque Lotus 25 driven by Jim Clark. Excerpt: The 1967 Belgian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Spa-Francorchamps on June 18, 1967.Race report Jim Clark led off the grid from pole position and maintained that position for the first 11 laps and was 20 seconds ahead of Jackie Stewart and Dan Gurney when he had to come into the pits for a plug change, which cost him two minutes. Stewart built up a comfortable lead, helped even further when Gurney had to come into the pits with fuel pressure problems, losing another 20 seconds. However, it was now Stewart’s time for mechanical problems as his gearshift was faltering. Gurney set a new lap record to catch and pass him 8 laps from the end and gain a maiden victory for the beautiful magnesium and titanium Eagle car. The lightness of the car made it incredibly fast-Gurney shattered Tony Brooks ‘ record Grand Prix average of 143mph (set some 8 years earlier) on his way to victory.Classification Pos: No: Driver: Constructor: Laps: Time/Retired: Grid: Points Notes References (URLs online) Previous race: 1967 Dutch Grand Prix : FIA Formula One World Championship 1967 season : Next

Excerpt: The Brabham BT19 (pronounced ) is a Formula One racing car designed by Ron Tauranac for the British Brabham team. The BT19 competed in the 1966 and 1967 Formula One World Championships and was used by Australian driver Jack Brabham to win his third World Championship in 1966. The BT19, which Brabham referred to as his “Old Nail”, was the first car bearing its driver’s name to win a World Championship race. The car was initially conceived in 1965 for a 1.5-litre (92-cubic inch) Coventry Climax engine, but never raced in this form. For the 1966 Formula One season the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) doubled the limit on engine capacity to 3 litres (183 cu in). Australian company Repco developed a new V8 engine for Brabham’s use in 1966, but a disagreement between Brabham and Tauranac over the latter’s role in the racing team left no time to develop a new car to handle it. Instead, the existing BT19 chassis was modified for the job. Only one BT19 was built. As of 2009, it is owned by Repco and on display in the National Sports Museum in Melbourne, Australia. It is often demonstrated at motor… More:
