Chapters: 117 Births, 117 Deaths, Trajan, Aelius Aristides, List of State Leaders in 117, Maurus, Pantalemon and Sergius, Astius, Hermione of Ephesus, 117 Ad. Excerpt: Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus, commonly known as Trajan (18 September 53 8 August 117), was the Roman Emperor who reigned over the Empire at the point of its greatest geographic extent. It was as a military commander however that Trajan celebrated his greatest triumphs. In 101, he launched a punitive expedition into the kingdom of Dacia against king Decebalus, defeating the Dacian army near Tapae in 102, and finally conquering Dacia completely in 106. In 107, Trajan pushed further east and annexed the Nabataean kingdom, establishing the province of Arabia Petraea. After a period of relative peace within the Empire, he l… More: |

Excerpt: 19th century 20th century 21st century The 2000s decade in film involved many significant films. Thousands of full-length films have been produced during the first decade of the 21st Century. Building on developments in the 1990s, computers are used to create effects that would have previously been more expensive, from the subtle erasing of surrounding islands in Cast Away (leaving Tom Hanks’ character stranded with no other land in sight) to the spectacular battle scenes such as those in Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Matrix and 300. In addition, film genres not known for their popular appeal in North America became increasingly attractive to filmgoers: films in foreign languages like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Passion of the Christ and Letters from Iwo Jima; and documentary films like An Inconvenient Truth, March of the Penguins, Super Size Me, and Fahrenheit 9/11, became very successful. Also gaining popularity was the use of Computer-generated imagery (CGI) to produce films. These types of films were originally seen in the 1990s with the likes of Toy Story and its sequel Toy Story 2, but CGI films became more popular in 2001 with the release of Shrek. Other popular CGI films include Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Shrek 2, and Ratatouille. The 2000s also saw a resurgence of several genres. For example, Gladiator, Moulin Rouge!, and Spider-Man increased the popularity of the Epic, Musical, and comic book genres, respectively. The … More: |

Excerpt: Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus, commonly known as Trajan (18 September 53 8 August 117), was the Roman Emperor who reigned over the Empire at the point of its greatest geographic extent. The thirteenth emperor, he ruled from AD 98 until his death in AD 117. Born Marcus Ulpius Traianus into a non-patrician family in the Hispania Baetica province (modern day Spain), Trajan rose to prominence during the reign of emperor Domitian, serving as a general in the Roman army along the German frontier, and successfully crushing the revolt of Antonius Saturninus in 89. On September 18, 96, Domitian was succeeded by Marcus Cocceius Nerva, an old and childless senator who proved to be unpopular with the army. After a brief and tumultuous year in power, a revolt by members of the Praetorian Guard compelled him to adopt the more popular Trajan as his heir and successor. Nerva died on January 27, 98, and was succeeded by his adopted son without incident. As a civilian administrator, Trajan is best known for his extensive public building program, which reshaped the city of Rome and left multiple enduring landmarks such as Trajan’s Forum, Trajan’s Market and Trajan’s Column. After a period of relative peace within the Empire, he launched his final campaign in 113 against the Parthian Empire. Advancing as far as the city of Susa in 116, Trajan expanded the Roman Empire to its greatest te… More: |

A Bark In The Park-Doggin’ America’s Big Trees $0.99 Every year an estimated 29 million people travel with their dogs. But what happens when you actually want to leave the hotel room with your dog? This series of books is not about traveling with your dog to tiny, fenced-in dog parks or disappearing into the wilderness; it is about places you want to see, and taking your dog to share your fun. Here we track down America’s Big trees with a bonus feature on America’s best formal gardens for dogs…When European settlers arrived on these shores virgin forest stretched nearly unbroken to the Mississippi River. Early Americans were extremely adept at clearing land for farms and stripping forests for building materials. By 1900, out of five trees that stood in Colonial days, only one survived. You could travel with your dogs for days and hardly ever see a big tree.Today, much of the land has been reforested. Most eastern states whose slopes were cut bare in the 1800s now boast of more than 50% forestland. In a land of second- and third-growth woodlands “old growth forests” where trees have stood unmolested since the dawn of the America have become magical places.Old growth forests conjure up images of huge trees but these ancient forests are best characterized by their diversity. The woods are speckled with large snags that have broken in storms and mammoth trunks of decaying dead trees teeming with life litter the forest floor. A woodland hike through an old growth forest is like no other hike you can take with your dog. Searching out Big Trees makes an exciting outdoor vacation with your dog and this book describes several locations where these ancient treasures live.Formal gardens and arboretums are often not high on the hit list for adventurers with dogs. Experienced travelers know there are attractions you drive right by with your dog’s nose pressed forlornly against the car window. Formal gardens are typically high on the list of places that do |

A Book of Carnegie Libraries (1917) $42.95 Originally published in 1917 A BOOK OF CARNEGIE LIBRARIES by THEODORE WESLEY KOCH. Text extracted from opening pages of book: PREFACE: FOR the delay that has made this volume so far behind the plates which it was designed to accompany I make no apology. A combination of circumstances has prevented its earlier com pletion, and it has seemed better to follow the lines originally laid down for the work, rather than to delay it for still further revision. Plates and text together may have at least an histori cal value, and the library building development of the last dec ade might well be made the subject of a supplementary volume. The list of plates printed to accompany the original portfolio is bound with the present volume, as it contains in handy form for reference the names of architects and in some cases the amount of Carnegie donations. In making up the book, however, it has seemed advisable to rearrange the plates somewhat, and the list cannot be used as an index to the illustrati |

A Doctors Legacy: A Memoir of Merlin K. DuVal Founding Dean of Arizonas First Medical School $18.53 It was 1964. The job was to turn a dusty field into a top-ranking medical school. There were no buildings, no faculty, and no funds. Merlin K. DuVal accepted the challenge and won strong support as he began building the University of Arizona’s first College of Medicine.Starting his adult life as a model in New York in the 1940s DuVal climbed his way up to being appointed Assistant Secretary of Health during Nixon’s administration and finally being instrumental in the founding of the University of Arizona’s medical school. While DuVal was a public man with a long list of accomplishments, this is also a deeply personal account in which a high-powered doctor discovers that his children grew up without really knowing him.A year before his death, Dr. DuVal worked with journalist Linda Valdez to tell his story, and the real delight of this book is reading along as this man of remarkable intellectual curiosity examines his own life, his profession, and our society. |

A Gathering Storm $20.38 When terrorists slip into rural Georgia, the FBI and local police race to thwart a plot against potential targets that include a nuclear sub base, a weapons plant and the CDC. The setting is central Georgia. Across the state, dogwoods and azaleas are bursting forth in springtime splendor. Yet threatening clouds are forming on the horizon. The FBI learns that international terrorists have slipped into the country, with a final destination of Atlanta. “Why Atlanta?” they ask. “And why Georgia?” The FBI enlists the support of local police and compiles a list of potential targets, including a nuclear sub base, a nuclear weapons facility, the Lockheed plant that’s building the country’s next generation jet fighter, and the Carter Center, where Middle-Eastern leaders will soon meet for peace talks. As the story unfolds, the reader glimpses the terrorists moving toward their own D-Day, though the target remains unknown. The civility which he showed to Mozart is in marked contrast to Mozart’s behavior towards him. Moreover, his vanity did not blind him to his own defects. He was well aware that harmony, not melody, was the department in which he excelled. An enthusiastic contemporary, Schubart, calls him an epoch-making man. The expression is too strong, but as a musical iconoclast Vogler certainly did excellent service. His incessant attacks on the pedantic methods of musical instruction and systems of harmony in vogue, and on the old methods of organ-building., were .often extravagant and untrue, as, for example, the statement that Bach did not know what a chorale was. . . . As a composer it was his aim to retain the simple and severe beauty of the old church music and yet enrich it with the wealth of harmony at the command of modern music.” It has been said that Vogler’s music has been lost; but this statement is not true. His Missa Pastoricia is performed every Christmas at the Hofkapelle. Vienna. Herr Eichter reports that he has heard this mass more than once, and he describes it as a remarkably fine composition, with beautiful effects for oboes and horns. Other works of Vogler’s are accessible, and are not infrequently met with. Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians gives the best account of Vogler in English, also a full list of his works. The Browning Society’s Papers, number ten, 2: 221 and 2: 229*, gives an extended biographical account of Vogler by HelenJ. Ormerod ; and a briefer sketch will be found in number three, 1 : 339, by Eleanor Marx. An excellent interpretation of the poem is that by Mrs. Turnbull in number four of The Browning Society’s Papers, 1: 469 and 1 : 79*. It brings out fully Browning’s indeb |

A Short History Of The Tower Of London; With A List Of The Interesting Curiosities Contained In The Armories And Regalia $14.98 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 1HISTORY, ETC. OF THE TOWER OF LONDON. There is not, in this country, a building so replete with historical associations as the Tower Of London. Its early character as a palace, a prison, and a fortress, immediately connected with the metropolis, has rendered an acquaintance with its annals indispensable to a knowledge of the history of our great nation— annals which frequently supply, in their detail, those secret springs of political action, in the absence of which, the historian too frequently substitutes fancy for truth, and consequently produces, in the result of his labours, a mere textit{tale founded on facts. The opinions of antiquaries have been somewhat divided as to the origin of the Tower of London: by some it is supposed to have been erected by Julius Caesar; but the majority have attributed the undertaking to William the Conqueror. The ingot was in the form of a double wedge, four inches long, weighing 10 oz. 8gr. troy, and on the centre was impressed ” Ex. Offic. Honorii. But the short time that the Roman conqueror remained in Britain, together with his total silence upon the subject of any such work on his part, are circumstances which have been deemed sufficiently strong to throw considerable doubt upon the Roman origin of these poetically-styled “Towers of Julius:” indeed, antiquarians have |

A Surgeon In Belgium $24.59 The life of a hospital at the front is a curious mixture of excitement and dullness. One week cases will be pouring in, the operating theatre will be working day and night, and everyone will have to do their utmost to keep abreast of the rush; next week there will be nothing to do, and everyone will mope about the building, and wonder why they were ever so foolish as to embark on such a futile undertaking. For it is all emergency work, and there is none of the dull routine of the ordinary hospital waiting list, which we are always trying to clear off, but which is in reality the backbone of the hospital’s work. |

A description of the Exchange of Bristol: wherein the ceremony of laying the first stone of that structure; together with that of opening the building for publick use, is particularly recited. By John Wood, architect. $11.6 The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. A226 Road $46 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The A226 road travels in a west-east direction, from Crayford in the London Borough of Bexley, along north Kent through Gravesend to the Medway Towns. It is about 11 miles in length. Before road numbering began in the United Kingdom, the road was part of the major route between London and Dover, the road taken by all traffic heading for mainland Europe. ASHE Higher Education Report $19.99 Promoting diversity as a core value among social groups is one of the major challenges faced by institutions of higher education in the United States. By focusing on racial and ethnic minorities in higher education, this monograph provides a view of diversity as a positive and dynamic social force in society that promotes its integration as a core value and process.Diversity leadership challenges higher education to move beyond co-optation strategies, in which diversity is viewed as a descriptive and static organizational element, to the adoption of transformational strategies, in which diversity is viewed as a dynamic and positive process. Through the promotion and development of diversity leadership, institutional leadership is seen as building capacity to promote inclusive learning and workplace environments in colleges and universities. As demographic shifts in US society create an ever expanding context in which the well-being of the nation becomes increasingly linked to the social and cultural groups that have been systematically excluded from full participation in American society, the need for positive cultural and structural changes that foster their inclusion in higher education becomes an important challenge to address. This volume provides an overview of the context for diversity leadership roles and practices in higher education. It argues for an alignment between institutions of higher education and the diverse populations they serve in this country. This is volume 32, number 3, of the ASHE Higher Education Report, a bi-monthly journal published by Jossey-Bass.See our entire list of ASHE Higher Education Report titles for a wide variety of critical issues facing Higher Education today.  |

The .max files are presented in both beginning and finished form, with intermediate steps when necessary. Each chapter includes an overview of the goals and a list of skills needed to complete the exercises. Each exercise is introduced by a brief explanation of the intended results, when and where in production it would be used, and some typical examples. Step-by-step written instructions with drawings follow. Concluding each exercise are an image and discussion of the end result, along with a brief discussion of other possible outcomes and a suggestion of more advanced exercises the user can attempt. With lessons ranging from beginner to expert, students will be able to construct almost any type of building, interior, texture, or light effect with elegance and efficiency. |

Excerpt: The following is an incomplete list of pilots and other aircrew who flew during the Battle of Britain, and were awarded the Battle of Britain Clasp to the 193945 Star by flying at least one authorised operational sortie with an eligible unit of the Royal Air Force or Fleet Air Arm during the period from 0001 hours on 10 July to 2359 hours 31 October 1940. In 1942, the Air Ministry made the decision to compile a list from records of the names of pilots who had lost their lives as a result of the fighting during the Battle of Britain for the purpose of building a national memorial. This became the Battle of Britain Chapel at Westminster Abbey, which was unveiled by King George VI on 10 July 1947. The Roll of Honour within the Chapel contains the names of 1,497 pilots and aircrew killed or mortally wounded during the Battle. Nothing was done officially, however, to define the qualifications for the classification of a Battle of Britain airman until 9 Nov 1960. AMO N850, published by the Air Ministry, stated for the first time the requirements for the awarding of the Battle of Britain Star (noted above), and listed the 71 units which were deemed to have been under the control of RAF Fighter Command. In 1955 Flt Lt John Holloway, a serving RAF officer, began a personal challenge to compile a complete list of “The Few”. After fourteen years of research Flt Lt Holloway had 2,946 names on the list. Of these airmen, 537 were killed during the Battle or late… More: |

Agent-Based Models (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences Series) $14.7 Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a technique increasingly used in a broad range of social sciences. It involves building a computational model consisting of “agents,” each of which represents an actor in the social world, and an “environment” in which the agents act. Agents are able to interact with each other and are programmed to be pro-active, autonomous and able to perceive their virtual world. The techniques of ABM are derived from artificial intelligence and computer science, but are now being developed independently in research centers throughout the world. In Agent-Based Models, Nigel Gilbert reviews a range of examples of agent-based modeling, describes how to design and build your own models, and considers practical issues such as verification, validation, planning a modeling project, and how to structure a scholarly article reporting the results of agent-based modeling. It includes a glossary, an annotated list of resources, advice on which programming environment to use when creating agent-based models, and a worked, step-by-step example of the development of an ABM.This latest volume in the SAGE Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences series will have wide appeal in the social sciences, including the disciplines of sociology, economics, social psychology, geography, economic history, science studies, and environmental studies. It is appropriate for graduate students, researchers and academics in these fields, for both those wanting to keep up with new developments in their fields and those who are considering using ABM for their research.Key FeaturesAimed at readers who are new to ABMOffers a brief, but thorough, treatment of a cutting-edge techniqueOffers practical advice about how to design and create ABMIncludes carefully chosen examples from different disciplines |
