Explanations Of Four Common Computer Terms
Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Toshiba Laptop Battery First post by: www.batterystores.ca
For people who has been using and working with computers for years, it can be easy to forget that there are many other people who do not know what some relatively common terms mean, such as desktops, laptops, hardware and software. As a result I’ve written this short guide to explain what these four common terms mean.
Desktop Computers are – as their name suggests – computer systems which are designed to be put and used on a desk, or at least a single location (i.e. they aren’t designed to be portable). Whilst this might sound simple, when computers were first designed they were the size of a small room! And as a result, computers which were able to fit on a desk were seen as a very big technological breakthrough.
Desktops have multiple parts: there is a case which houses the various electrical components (‘hardware’) which makes the computer run, then there’s usually at least a monitor (the display device which we look at when using a computer), a speaker (to output sounds and music), a mouse (to control the on-screen cursor) and a keyword (used to input information into a computer). These four devices all plug-in to the computer case. Desktop computers are also commonly called ‘desktops’ or sometimes simply as ‘computers’.
Laptop Computers are smaller than desktops. This is because they are designed to be portable; in other words, so that they can be easily carried around by someone. Laptops were originally intended to be usable on someone’s lap (naturally this is where their name comes from!). However due to the large heat that laptop computers generate, this is discouraged. The various parts of a desktop computer (a monitor/display device, keyboard) are all integrated into a laptop.
To help with portability, laptops can be powered via a rechargeable battery or off mains electricity. When connected to mains power, the laptop’s battery recharges. And when used without mains power, the laptop uses the battery’s power to run. A typical laptop can run for 3-5 hours on batter power such as Toshiba PA3250U-1BRS Battery.
Hardware (‘Computer Parts’) is the term used to be describe the various electrical components inside a computer which make it work. A typical computing device (for example a desktop, laptop or even a mobile phone) tends to have as many as ten hardware components inside it. For example – speaking in rough terms – a ‘hard-drive’ is the component which stores data, a ‘CPU’ performs calculations, and a ‘motherboard’ houses these various components.
Software Programs are the computer programs which allow you to perform certain actions and tasks on a computer. There are two broad types of software: application software and operating system software.
Operating system software is a large, complex piece of software which manages every single aspect of a computer – for example, it manages the computer’s hardware, the way users interact with a computer, the application software installed on the system, and more. Examples of an operating system include Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux.
Application software – on the other hard – is a usually smaller and less complex piece of software which performs certain actions. For example, digital photo editing software is application software which allows you to modify photographs in various ways (for example, color correction, red eye removal, cropping, and more).

Excerpt: The Yamaha A-28 stereo control amplifier is a 100-watt integrated amplifier that was sold with the 28 Series of stereo components in 1986. It is a pretty basic amplifier, having a seven-band graphic equalizer , four inputs and a tape monitor, variable loudness, and large, centrally-located vertical red LED power meters. The A-28 is among the last amplifiers built by Yamaha that lack remote control capability. Like all of the 28 series units, it has a black face and black aluminum case.References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Portaflex is a line of amplifiers created by Ampeg . Originally designed by Jess Oliver, the main characteristic of the Portaflex is that the head of the amplifier is stored inside the cabinet and flips over when being used. The Portaflex line has many different configurations.Models B-15NSB-12 Ampeg manufactured the Portaflex SB-12 model amplifier in the mid 1960’s. It incorporated the flip-top design of other Portaflex amplifiers of the time. Although the SB-12 isn’t as well known as the B-15 of the time, it is still highly sought after by musicians who use it mainly for studio recording. The ‘SB’ in SB-12 stood for string bass. Fundamentals of Speaker Recognition $119 Speaker Recognition is an emerging technology which has become quite popular due to its practicality of implementation in an existing telephone infrastructure, and the capability of remote biometric authentication. It is a multidisciplinary subject with information scattered throughout different research publications and textbooks. Speaker Recognition is getting more and more known for providing voice authentication over the telephones for helpdesks, call centers and other enterprise business for business process automation. Technology is evolving to support the consumer end solutions, where people have to understand the fundamentals of speaker recognition.A single textbook which treats Speaker Recognition with all the theoretical details is highly desirable by advanced level students in computer science and engineering, concentrating on biometrics, speech recognition, pattern recognition, signal processing and specifically speaker recognition. It will also be desired by developers of commercial technology and speech scientists. The Fundamentals of Speaker Recognition introduces the different branches of Speaker Recognition: Speaker Identification, Speaker Verification, Speaker Classification (Audio Event Classification), Speaker Detection, Speaker Tracking and more. The technical problems are formed and rigorously defined in detail, and practical algorithms are covered in this text. A complete picture is made of the relevance of the discussed algorithms and their usage in building a comprehensive Speaker Recognition System. This text book also includes examples and exercises at the end of each chapter (with a direct link to a solution’s manual). The Fundamentals of Speaker Recognition is truly designed as a textbook for advanced level students in computer science and engineering. This textbook is also suitable for practitioners and researchers in industry. |

Linguistic Semantics $145 This volume is a comprehensive, up-to-date, and readable introduction to linguistic meaning. While partial to conceptual and typological approaches, the book also presents results from formal approaches. Throughout, the focus is on grammatical meaning — the way languages delineate universal semantic space and encode it in grammatical form. Subjects covered by the author include: the domain of linguistic semantics and the basic tools, assumptions, and issues of semantic analysis; semantic properties of entities, events, and thematic roles; language and space; tense, aspect, and the internal structure and temporal ordering of events; modality, negation, and the epistemology of the speaker; and modification and attribution. In contrast to most current treatments of semantics, this book is accessible to the beginning student of semantics and linguistics and also useful to the advanced practitioner. A textbook and reference work in a single volume, it can be used in a number of disciplines: psychology, computer science, and anthropology as well as linguistics. |

Regulus Grammar Compiler $37 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Regulus Grammar Compiler is a software system for compiling unification grammars into grammars for speech recognition systems. Speech recognition (also known as automatic speech recognition or computer speech recognition) converts spoken words to text. The term “voice recognition” is sometimes used to refer to recognition systems that must be trained to a particular speaker-as is the case for most desktop recognition software. Recognizing the speaker can simplify the task of translating speech. Speech recognition is a broader solution which refers to technology that can recognize speech without being targeted at single speaker-such as a call center system that can recognize arbitrary voices. |
