Around World
What’s it called when the world around you turns into another place?

Some times when the scary man is around (visual hallucination), he takes me to a cliff. My world turns into a different place. We stand on a cliff and he tells me to jump. But I’ve been too scared to jump. What is this called?

A very very complex hallucination at that. You Need to be evaluated by a doctor, very bad things can happen. Whatever you do, don’t jump. Good luck.

 Goodbye, Africa...

Goodbye, Africa…

Raymond Spenser was born in 1940s South Africa, when it was forbidden to treat a Black citizen as an equal member of society. This intolerance sets the stage for Raymond’s enlightening and inspiring global adventure. As a child, Raymond had extraordinary dreams: to become a magician, actor, and director. In addition, he aspired to experience the “real Africa.” After several decades of traveling through Southern Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia, Raymond achieves his professional goal: TV production in Johannesburg.Racial politics impels Raymond and his family to reach the Australian safe haven of Canberra. In the 1980s, Raymond moves with his wife and two sons to Zimbabwe, where he works as a producer and teacher, and becomes deeply involved in the local community. But soon, Raymond sees the inevitable writing on the wall. It is time to say, “Goodbye” to Africa.Author Desmond Bishop writes because he wants to engage the world around him. He started writing educational documentaries for the ABC in Sydney, in 1975. Desmond has worked as a producer and a teacher. Prostitution, Politics & Policy

Prostitution, Politics & Policy

$49.95

Prostitution has become an extremely topical issue in recent years and attention has focused both on the situation of female prostitutes and the adequacy of existing forms of regulation. Prostitution, Politics & Policy brings together the main debates and issues associated with prostitution in order to examine the range of policy options that are available. Governments in different parts of the world have been struggling to develop constructive policies to deal with prostitution – as, for example, the British Home Office recently instigated a £1.5 million programme to help address the perceived problems of prostitution. In the context of this struggle, and amidst the publication of various policy documents, Prostitution, Politics & Policy develops a fresh approach to understanding this issue, while presenting a range of what are seen as progressive and radical policy proposals. Much of the debate around prostitution has been polarized between liberals – who want prostitution decriminalized, normalized and humanized – and conservatives – who have argued that prostitution should be abolished. But, drawing on a wide range of international literature, and providing an overview that is both accessible to students and relevant to policy makers and practitioners, Roger Matthews proposes a form of radical realism that is irreducible to either of these two positions.

Berkes explores the importance of local and indigenous knowledge as a complement to scientific ecology, and its cultural and political significance for indigenous groups themselves. This second edition is expanded and updated throughout, and places greater emphasis on knowledge as process. It has two new chapters, Chapter 8 on climate change, demonstrating how indigenous communities read environmental signals, and Chapter 9 on how indigenous knowledge deals with complexity.

Tourism, Development and Growth presents a comprehensive examination of the concept of sustainability as it relates to tourism growth. Set within the context of rapid change in contemporary tourism and world trends, the contributors explore how new geopolitical, socioeconomic, technological and environmental circumstances are influencing world tourism today.Focusing on different types of tourism appropriate to particular situations, the essays offer examples from around the world–including the US and Canada–to explore issues concerning tourism’s contribution to economic, social, political and environmental advancement of developing countries, and the challenges to and the importance of tourism in industrialized nations. ”Donor-driven” neoliberal reform processes, ”democratization” and the production of deforestation in Kenya: The case of Karura and Oloolua forests in Nairobi.

$49.99

In sub-Saharan Africa, like most of the developing world, democratization has coincided with neoliberal economic reform. Yet, studies of democratization and neoliberalism tend to remain separate, failing to recognize their complex interconnections, both in their material and discursive dimensions. At the heart of this dissertation research is the question of how these interconnections are manifested in the environments of urban sub-Saharan Africa. The dissertation examines the role that combined processes of implementing neoliberal adjustment programs and electoral democratization in Kenya played in the deforestation of Karura and Oloolua forest reserves. The forest reserves are located in Nairobi, the nation’s commercial and political capital. Both forests underwent accelerated loss of trees and land in the 1990s, a period during which state elites were grappling with early phases of neoliberal reform and electoral democratization in the country. Additionally, the dissertation examines responses from various civil society groups and individuals to the issue of deforestation. Ideas in urban political ecology, debates around relationships between the environment and both processes of democratization and neoliberal economic reform, and discussions of collective action arising from civil society and social movements inform the analysis in this dissertation. The dissertation draws from interviews and discussions conducted with state and city officials, key individuals of various civil society groups, and ordinary Nairobi residents. The dissertation also considers relevant print materials. This study concludes that the realities of electoral democracy and neoliberal economic reform in Kenya complicate simplistic views of the interactions between democratization and neoliberalism. The study argues that the pressure to satisfy donors with a neoliberal agenda, in combination with the pressure to raise funds to compete in a multiparty election, led state elites to sell and

''How Do We Know They Know?'': A conversation about pre-service teachers learning about culture and social justice

”How Do We Know They Know?”: A conversation about pre-service teachers learning about culture and social justice

$8.58

Teacher education programs are charged with educating teachers to teach all students-preparing them to teach multiethnic, multiracial, multilingual, and differently-abled students in an increasingly global, inter-dependent world. This book takes as its starting point the assumption that pre-service teacher candidates, primarily white and middle-class, come to college to pursue a teaching degree having little if any experience of a social nature with persons not like themselves. Rooted in areas of theory and practice and based around the “Schools and Society” and “Culturally Relevant Teaching” courses required by the Teacher Education Program social justice conceptual framework, “How Do We Know They Know?” is a conversation about ways to assess these pre-service teachers’ growth and movement, as they progress from naiveté to awareness about the realities of culture in schools.

”Mandela went to China…and India too”: Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

$49.99

The cultural landscape of South Africa is reflected in the songs and games of young children whose music often embodies the social and political history of the world around them. My research with young children in the Limpopo province of South Africa is indicative of how children of similar ages identify with the idea of South Africa as a nation and how children use music as an educational tool to engage with their social and cultural identities.;This dissertation examines how music, education and the media impact the culture of childhood in South Africa and draws on the political and social history of South Africa that is enmeshed in the musical education of children today. The purpose of the study is to understand how young children utilize and experience music as a tool to explore, and consequently educate themselves in relationship to their social and cultural histories. Based on scholarship that bridges the fields of music education, sociology, child development, media studies and ethnomusicology, this dissertation aims to outline how children’s musical cultures are not mere copycats of adult musical systems, but rather intricate memes, or units of cultural information, that are propagated and sustained within the culture of childhood.;Contributing to an understanding of the role of music in children’s lives in Limpopo, this dissertation examines how music contributes to identity formation in childhood. This process is explored through an examination of local, national and global influences on the musical language of childhood in South Africa. From handclapping songs to traditional music, from commercials to programs such as Takalani Sesame, the musical worlds of children in Limpopo give voice to an understanding of how children engage with and sustain unique musical cultures.

”The monsters we defy”: Washington, D.C. in the Red Summer of 1919.

$49.99

This dissertation examines a race riot in the nation’s capital, one of the dozens of racial “clashes” instigated by white mobs that swept across the U.S. in the summer of 1919. That July in Washington, D.C., hundreds of white military men, soon joined by civilians, began attacking black citizens after weeks of sensationalized reports of black attacks on white women. Black Washingtonians were expecting violence; some had written letters to the city’s daily papers protesting the inflammatory headlines and warning that they would lead to violence. The city’s black newspaper, echoed by ministers and other leaders, exhorted black citizens to protect their homes and families.;Using both social history and cultural history methodologies, this study examines the riot in the larger context of racial violence, in particular lynching, and the African American experience of World War I. It offers a brief history of the nation’s capital, focusing on its substantial and relatively prosperous black population. The panoramic story of the riot is drawn from a combination of sources, while later discussion focuses on specific stories, investigating closely narrative content, context, and form in order to unpack the implications around race, gender and sexuality with which they are fraught. Black and white newspapers, government officials, civil rights activists, individual citizens, a former president, and military intelligence agents all offered explanations of and predictions based on the Washington riot. My analysis traces contemporary evaluations, drawing connections among them and making suggestions as to their specific implications for American racial politics.;The black self defense of 1919 rose from a long tradition of resistance to white violence and fed in its turn the political and intellectual discourse which would find fuller expression decades later in the postwar civil rights movement. This riot represents a central and insufficiently examined aspect of racial

”The way these people can just listen!”: Inquiries about the Mahler tradition in the Concertgebouw.

$49.99

This study addresses the presumable distinct, auratic quality that performances of symphonies by Gustav Mahler in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw seem to have, a phenomenon also referred to as the Concertgebouw’s Mahler tradition. Are these performances indeed in high demand and experienced more intensely than other performances in the Concertgebouw, and, if so, why? And what kinds of audiences attend these events and for what reasons?;The author approaches the typical Mahler performance as a ritual in which a wide range of contextual factors is at play and in which different values can be enacted by the participants. The typical Mahler performance is studied from four perspectives: (1) the history of the person of Mahler in the Concertgebouw and the tradition that was built around the composer and performances of his works, particularly by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; (2) the role of Mahler in the present-day programming of the hall, audience types attending these performances, and the space of the Main Hall; (3) verbal and non-verbal audience responses to performances of symphonies by both Mahler and Bruckner, presented on the basis of online questionnaires and video footage of audience members listening to the symphonies; (4) the event of the Mahler performance as analyzed using concepts from the field of ritual theory.;The conclusion of the study is that performances of Mahler’s symphonies are highly effective in the Concertgebouw due to the historical, symbolic, and spatial contexts in which they take place. Mahler plays an important role in the history of the Concertgebouw and is acknowledged as such by numerous signs inside the hall. The acoustics of the Main Hall are considered the most favorable in the world for late romantic music, and the hall is visually well suited for ritual experiences. Patrons are relatively familiar with Mahler’s repertoire and they like performances of his symphonies significantly better than those of Bruckner symphonies in many

$49.99

Arthur Miller and Anthony Burgess share many parallels in their motives for writing Death of a Salesman and A Clockwork Orange. The main characters’ reactions to their post-world war societies bond the works through the universal ambivalence of personality and impersonality. By analyzing the play and the novel under the guidance of Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pentad, the works feature unadulterated similarities that characterize both works as representatives of dystopian despair following World War II. Both authors frame their stories around radical, yet insignificant characters who become victims of their societal attitudes and whose familial inheritance predetermines their failure. By inspecting these works as dystopian exemplars, it becomes clear that Miller and Burgess create nightmarish societies to depict life’s lack of purpose.

It seems a habit of our time to lament about thestate of the world and simultaneously profess thatthere is nothing we, as individuals, can do about it.In this auto/ethnographic study, Elisabeth challengesthis view on the basis that science teachers inparticular seem in a unique position to raisestudents’ awareness of problematic issues in relationto the world around them by providing them withnecessary knowledge. Sound knowledge however, doesnot equate with positive attitude: providing studentswith factual knowledge alone might thus beinsufficient for enabling them to participate in thepublic discourse on making the world a ‘betterplace’. Given the pervading influence of science onour daily lives, this discourse must include a focuson science, scientific research and its uses.Traditionally science has often been taught withoutaddressing ethical questions. Elisabeth argues thatthe inclusion of a discourse on ethical issues intoscience classrooms might open an avenue for scienceeducators to offer students opportunities forpractising engagement as future decision makers bylearning to reflect critically and collaboratively ontheir attitudes, beliefs and values.

Working together, citizens of the Atlantic world expanded the scale and scope of philanthropic activity. This dissertation moves beyond questions about the economic motives behind the rise of humanitarianism. Instead, through a transatlantic and transassociational study, with particular focus on medical philanthropy, it focuses on how philanthropists built a complex charitable infrastructure and found ways to help suffering strangers near and far. This study reveals that activists recast organized beneficence through targeted changes that they collected and crafted as a result of a cosmopolitan approach to the world common in their era. Eighteenth-century philanthropists bequeathed to their successors an accelerating pace of growth, a vastly elaborated charitable landscape, and the expectation of a worldwide reach. The developments that made possible those legacies unfolded as the Consumer Revolution burgeoned, the globe became more integrated (giving rise to a pragmatic cosmopolitanism among many people), and Americans and Britons made and unmade the empire. Rather than a major transformation, expansion of humanitarian activity rested on measured change. Through focused and incremental innovations trafficked among people around the Anglophone Atlantic, philanthropists identified more and more discrete groups as objects worthy of charitable assistance, enlarged the universe of eleemosynary institutions, and found routine ways to extend charity beyond local or particularistic boundaries. This dissertation studies that evolution through analyses of philanthropists’ activities at both the transnational and local levels. It first examines the role of geographically mobile individuals in the collection, transmission, and introduction to urban Atlantic communities of new programs. This study then probes the pervasive impact of the Consumer Revolution on philanthropy through the international celebrity of English prison reformer John Howard. Attention then turns to

The young Frank had emerged from the sickly bowels of Irish poverty and was on his passage to America, looking out from the Irish Oak at the lights of New York. With these words, McCourt ignited the expectations of millions of readers, who wondered what would happen to this resourceful young man, who seemed to have survived his youth sustained only on the strength of his imagination, his fierce love of language, and the occasional egg. With ‘Tis, McCourt answers these yearnings with the continuation of his memoirs, recounting his life as a young immigrant making his way in New York City. But the hopeful tenor of those closing words is almost immediately doused, as he finds the implied promise of his first slice of lemon meringue pie (“I’m thinking if this is the way they eat in America I’ll be fine and fat…”) dashed by the reality that an Irishman who has rotten teeth, bad eyes, and no high school diploma has few opportunities in the land of plenty. Excerpt: The SLNCR Lough Class was a class of 0-6-4 steam tank locomotives of the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway (SLNCR). During the years of World War II the SLNCR was able to make a profit with fuel restrictions curtailing road transport. The ending of the war saw the resumption of road competition and the worsening of the company’s financial situation which was eventually to lead to its demise. Following the end of WW2 many railways suffered a motive power crisis and to offset their problems the SLNCR looked around for suitable locomotives to take on loan but nothing suitable was available from either the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) or Córas Iompair Éireann. Manchester locomotive builders Beyer, Peacock and Company were approached with an order for a single 0-6-4T locomotive and despite the company’s worsening financial situation a second locomotive was ordered the following year. Although these two locomotives were ready for delivery in Spring 1949 they were not delivered until 1951, being the subject of a hire – purchase agreement. They became, along with the ‘Turf Burner’ built by CIÉ, the last new steam locomotives to enter service with an Irish railway company. At this time an unlined black livery was used by the company. Brasswork was also painted black, however the borders and lettering of the locomotive nameplates were picked out in red. In the early days of the black livery, the company initials SLNCR appeared on the tanks of the 0-6-4T locos. Coupling rods were painted red. The SLNCR did not number its steam locomotives but named them. These were named Lou…

Some details of his biography can be gleaned from the works of the 1st century AD Roman-Jewish historian Josephus Flavius. $13.95

Organizations that want to have effective managers must be committed to facilitating management development. The age-old question of whether a leader is born or is made has the same answer today as when it was first asked. One element for effective management is developing core skills such as thinking and decision making. A manager can have all the personality and expertise in the world but if they don’t stop and think before they act, their business is at risk of not being around for the long term. 10 Elements for Effective Management is Volume 5 of the Howatt HR Consulting Talent Management Series that has been developed to promote strategic talent management considerations. Corporate leaders today are looking for strategic ways to align their business and people. One core element is to be committed to developing effective managers, because most people don’t quit their roles; they quit their managers. So organizations no longer can afford ineffective managers. Each of the 10 sections in this book provides leaders with core management skills that are critical for a manager to be more effective in their role and interaction with their reports and operation.William A. Howatt, PhD, EdD, Post Doc Behavioral Science UCLA School of Medicine, is CEO of Howatt HR Consulting Inc., a strategic human resources management company. 100 GOD-BLOGSThe heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Psalm 19:1) If we look carefully, we can see illustrations of Biblical truth in the world around us. That is the idea behind these GOD-BLOGS. They are a collection of devotional thoughts originally written in weekly installments to a list of subscribers. Some are humorous; some are sad; some are challenging; and some are comforting. All of them are taken from some part of the author’s life. He hopes they will help the readers spot glimpses of God’s truth in their daily lives, too. A lengthy topic (keyword) index is in the back of the book to help readers find specific topics of interest, which is especially helpful for preachers and Bible teachers.Phil Walter wants to be an agent of God’s peace, a messenger of God’s truth, and a servant of God’s love. During his 43 years of service to Christ and the church, he has strived to fulfill that calling by serving as an ordained minister/pastor, an ordained missionary, an ordained church elder, a field chaplain for the local sheriff’s office, a church administrator, the producer of a city-wide Christian theatrical outreach event, an administrative director for a national ministry, and a youth minister. In all his work, he has a heart for people. This was one of the reasons he wrote this book. He wants to help people walk with God each day.By God’s grace, Phil is the proud father of five wonderful children and the grandfather of nine amazing grandchildren. He has been married to his lovely wife, Susan, for 42 years and they live in Winter Garden, Florida.

1000 Consecutive Days of Fasting

$19.33

Is fasting 1000 consecutive days possible? Not fasting day and night without any food and water, no, that’s not possible; but fasting for over a thousand consecutive days from 15 to 17 hours a day is possible. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be the person to do this. But why fast 1000 days? What was the reason behind it all? I wish the answer to why a person would fast 1000 days was simple, but it’s not. The absolute truth is that I never intended to fast 1000 days. It never even entered into my mind. Had it, I know I would have rejected the idea. I never thought it was possible. I didn’t even think 100 days was possible until GOD blessed me to do it. It was not until I had fasted around 700 days that I began to believe 1000 days of fasting was possible. That’s when I prayed and said to God, “Lord, since you have blessed me to fast 700 days, I have only one request now. Lord, bless me to go 1000 days.” The Lord heard my request and granted it.During my fast I kept wondering and saying, “Lord, why? Why won’t you give me a release from this fast?” It was not until I had fasted 1000 days that God revealed the reason why He had me fasting all those days. God spoke to my mind and said, “Vernard, I didn’t have you fasting for ‘you’, I had you fasting for people who need Me all over the world.” So I was not fasting for me, I was fasting for you –people who are broken, people who have been wounded and bruised, and people who need God to move in their behalf.

Excerpt: Bergen – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The city of Bergen, traditionally thought to have been founded by king Olav Kyrre, son of Harald Hardråde in 1070 AD, four years after the Viking Age ended. Modern research has, however, discovered that a trading settlement was established already during the 1020s or 1030s. It is considered to have replaced Trondheim as Norway’s capital in 1217, and that Oslo became the de jure capital in 1299. Towards the end of the 13th century, Bergen became one of the Hanseatic League’s most important bureau cities. The main reason for Bergen’s importance was the trade with dried cod from the northern Norwegian coast, which started around 1100. By the late 1300s, Bergen had established itself as the centre of the trade in Norway. The Hanseatic merchants lived in their own separate quarter of town, where Middle Saxon was used, enjoying exclusive rights to trade with the northern fishermen that each summer sailed to Bergen. Today, Bergen’s old quayside, Bryggen is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. The city has throughout its history been plagued with numerous great city fires. In 1198 the Bagler-faction set fire on the city in connection with a battle against the Birkebeiner faction during the civil war. In 1248 Holmen and Sverresborg burned, and 11 churches were destroyed. In 1413 another fire struck the city, and 14 churches were destroyed. In 1428 the city was plundered by pirates on a mission for the Hanseatic League, the same who was responsible for burning down Munkeliv Abbey in 1455. In 1476 Bryggen burned down in a fire started by a drunk trader. In 1582 another fire hit the city centre and Strandsiden. In 1675, 105 buildings burned down in Øvregaten. 1089 Nights

$2.95

Ann von Lossberg and boyfriend Jim Hudock stand at the dock at Baltimore harbor and wave goodbye to their screaming-red VW bus en route to England–”just about the most beautiful magic carpet I’ve ever seen,” Ann says. Quitting their jobs and selling their possessions, they travel around the world with no fixed itinerary-presuming that their odyssey will be no less magical than Ali Baba’s classical odyssey. The first overland trip, two and a half years, is to the Middle East and Africa; a second trip to Asia is thirteen months. “Extended travel peels away the layers of your former self, especially the demands of Africa,” Ann says. “Something happens when you give up wearing a watch and relinquish control over time. Experience found us; extraordinary things that just don’t happen to people happened to us. We learned to leap, and the net always appeared.” The language that filled Ann’s journals, seasoning over twenty-five years’ time to become the sixteen stories of 1089 Nights, gives way to something rich and transcendent. A sympathetic storyteller with a keen eye-most commonly the lone woman traveler among men-Ann provides us with an armchair view of the world without the mosquitoes. From Syria to Mozambique to Cambodia, over and over, this heartening memoir shows us that the world is a wondrous place, that travel can change us, satisfy something soulful, and promote the most personal kind of peace. 1089 Nights is a passionate love affair with the world that carries an urgent plea. “The world passes us by faster than we know. If we don’t catch it soon, the airwaves will immutably wash over us in the same likeness. We will become as one.” “Hurry,” Ann says, “the camels arewaiting.”

110 Year Old Father

This year my father is 111. The world’s oldest man, 113-year-old World War I veteran Henry Allingham, died Saturday July 18, 2009. It was reported by AP that he spent his final years reminding Britain about the 9 million soldiers killed during the conflict. My father was a teenager during the war given that he was born around 1898. His age was estimated based on the arrival of the first airplane into Kenya, the great cassava famine, the First World War and his ‘riika’ or his circumcision age group. My paternal grandfather married three wives and my father was a son of the first wife. My paternal grandmother lived to be 125. None of my father’s age mates that he grew up with are alive today. Like his mother, father and grandfather, he has never visited a modern hospital and by no means popped modern-day medicines in his body. He has been blessed and healthy throughout his entire life. For many years, my father labored to raise a family of thirty children, three wives, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and most recently, a great-great-great granddaughter!

They’ve rediscovered the magic of the game in “extreme” golf, and their adventures are about to inspire golfers everywhere.  Here are players like Andre Tolme, who decided to turn Mongolia into a par 11,880 course and Torsten Schilling, who spends his weekends teeing off from the side of his boat aiming for sites back on shore. From New Zealand’s naked open to golf in Antarctica, Duncan Lennard describes a world at the very edge of the sport.

From cell phones to body piercings and hair dye, seductive clothes and strange boyfriends, girls want to test the waters and experience what the world has to offer. 12 Photographic Journeys: Iran in the 21st Century

$4.95

This book explores, through the vision of ten contemporary Iranian photographers, the contrasts and contradictions that exist in Iranian Society at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Each representation is different to the next and each image serves to represent the main conflict present in Iran today: that of the power of tradition versus the quest for modernity. Each of the ten photographers has chosen an aspect of daily life in their country, for example, a café, a shopping mall, and the clerics, with each serving to show another part of the mosaic of cultural experience in Iran. One theme that remains constant through all of the images is that of women, who remain living symbols of the interaction between change and stagnation. In this book, women test the limits of the Hijab and their experience is used to represent that of young women all around the world.Distributed by I.B.Tauris

“I wonder sometimes if there’s something to the old superstition about the number thirteen. Maybe that superstition was originally created by the mothers in some tribe who noticed that in their children’s thirteenth year, they suddenly became possessed by evil spirits. Because it did seem that whenever Taz was around, things spilled and shattered, calm turned into chaos, and tempers were lost.”So laments the mother of one thirteen-year-old boy, Taz, a teen who, overnight it seemed, went from a small, sweet, loving boy to a hulking, potty-mouthed, Facebook/MySpace–addicted C student who didn’t even bother to hide his scorn for being anywhere in the proximity of his parents. As this startling transformation floors journalist Beth Harpaz and her husband, Elon, Harpaz tries to make sense of a bizarre teenage wilderness of $100 sneakers, clouds of Axe body spray (to hide the scent of pot?!), and cell phone bills so big they require nine-by-twelve envelopes. In the process, she begins chronicling her son’s hilarious, sometimes harrowing, indiscretions, blaming herself (“I am a terrible mother” becomes her steadfast refrain), Googling unfamiliar teenage slang, reading every parenting book she can get her hands on, and querying friends who also have teens. From a derailed family vacation where Taz is more interested in trying to get a cell phone connection than looking at the world’s largest trees (boring!), to a prom where Taz is caught with liquor, to a trip to Australia sans parents in which Taz actually doesn’t get into any trouble and manages to do his own laundry, the events that mark Taz’s newfound and troublesome independence are told with a wry and poignant voice by a woman who’s both wistful for the past and trying her hardest to understand her son’s head-scratching new behavior. In her quest to infiltrate his world by spying on his MySpace page (where he claims

13th Step: A Global Journey in Search of Our Cosmic Destiny

$14.95

In 1998, scientist, healer, and mystic Jude Currivan heard an inner message—a call to undertake a global quest that would transform her life and take her and her fellow travelers on an inner and outer odyssey that would ultimately reveal our hidden heritage and cosmic destiny. The initial intention of these journeys was to activate the healing energies of 12 ancient Lemurian artifacts around the earth to support the collective shift of awareness prophesied for 2012. But an even deeper purpose began to unfold. . . .The native elders of indigenous traditions around the world say that in these momentous times, “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” As did the heroes of mythology, we are now about to embark on a spiritual quest to remember the wholeness of who we really are.The 12 activations and the opening of a galactic portal were completed during the December solstice of 2003, but in 2006 a further call heralded a 13th healing journey. As we approach 2012 and experience the birth pangs of a new age, this book shares an inspirational message of hope and reconciliation. It offers an empowering call for every one of us to embody our own divinity and fulfill our highest purpose as the heroes of this transformation.

Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Summa Theologica (Latin: “Summary of Theology” or “Highest Theology”) or the Summa Theologiæ or simply the Summa, written 12651274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 12251274), although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of the time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa’s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; God’s creation, Man; Man’s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinquae viae (Latin: five ways). Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine of Hippo, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish, Muslim and ancient pagan scholars. The Summa Theologica is a more mature and structured version of Aquinas’s earlier Summa contra Gentiles. This earlier work was more apologetic, each article refuting a belief of a heresy. The Summa is composed of three major parts, each of which deals with a major subsection of Christian theology. Each part contains several questions, each of which revolves around a more specific subtopic; one such question being “Of Christ’s Manner of Life.” Each question contains several articles, which are phrased as interrogative statements dealing with specific issues, such as “Whether Christ should have led a life of poverty in this world?” The Summa has a standard format for handling each article. This method of exposition is derived from Averroes, to whom Aquinas refers respectfully as “the Commentator.” The Summa makes many references to certain

The HNLMS Java in c. 1941During the Second World War, the Dutch navy was based in Allied countries after the Netherlands were conquered by Nazi Germany in a matter of days: the Dutch navy had its headquarters in London and smaller dependencies in Sri Lanka and Australia. Around the world Dutch naval units were responsible for troop transport, for example during Operation Dynamo in Dunkirk and D-Day, they escorted convoys and attacked enemy targets. During the war the navy suffered heavy losses, especially in defending the Dutch East Indies, most notably the Battle of the Java Sea in which the commander, Dutchman Karel Doorman, went down with his ships together with 1000 of his crew. After the war, the relations between the Netherlands and its colonies changed dramatically. The establishment of the Republic of Indonesia, 2 days after the Japanese surrender, thwarted the Dutch plans for restoring colonial authority. Excerpt: The Globus Jagellonicus or Jagiellonian globe , made in France and dated to around 1510, is by some considered to be the oldest existing globe to show the Americas . It bears a striking resemblance to the Hunt-Lenox Globe , also tentatively dated to 1510 which is the second or third oldest known terrestrial globe , after the Erdapfel of Martin Behaim , made in Nuremberg in 1492, the year before the Columbus’ discovery became known in March 1493, and thus without the new continents. Globes made by Martin Waldseemüller in 1507 already showed America. The globus belonged to the medieval Cracow Academy which was in 1817 renamed to Jagiellonian University; it is featured on display at the Collegium Maius Museum. It was rediscovered in the early 1870s and described as Globus Jagellonicus in 1900 by Prof. Tadeusz Estreicher in the Transactions of the Cracow Academy of Sciences for that year. At the time, when no Polish state existed for about a century, Prof. Estreicher points out that this globe indicating recent geographical discoveries, possessed by the Cracow Academy since 1510, throws special light on the interest taken by Polish scholars of that time. The gilded copper globe is considered the earliest existing globe to indicate any part of the New World and the first to delineate the South American continent. It is also the oldest globe on which the continent of America is shown to be distinct from that of Asia. It uses the name “America” , which had been introduced in 1507 by Martin Waldseemüller in his Universalis Cosmographia , though for a continent located to the south of India. A replica of the globe is on display in the Polish Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh Robert J. King has pointed out that America was shown on the Jagiellonian Globe in two

Excerpt: The Zeno map is a map of the North Atlantic first published in 1558 in Venice by Nicolo Zeno, a descendant of Nicolo Zeno, of the Zeno brothers .The younger Zeno published the map, along with a series of letters, claiming he had discovered them in a storeroom in his family’s home in Venice. According to Zeno, the map and letters date from around the year 1400 and purportedly describe a long voyage made by the Zeno brothers in the 1390s under the direction of a prince named Zichmni . The voyage supposedly traversed the North Atlantic and, according to some interpretations, reached North America .Most historians regard the map and accompanying narrative as a hoax , perpetrated by the younger Zeno to make a retroactive claim for Venice as having discovered the New World before Christopher Columbus .The evidence against the authenticity of the map is based largely on the appearance of many non-existent islands in the North Atlantic and off the coast of Iceland . One of these non-existent islands was Frisland , where the Zeno brothers allegedly spent some time.Current scholarship regards the map as being based on existing maps of the sixteenth century, in particular:References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at …

Excerpt: Naulakha Pavilion – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia When the pavilion was built in 1633 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a small summer house, it cost around 900,000 rupees, an exorbitant amount at the time. It is called Naulakha because in Urdu language, the word means ‘worth 9 lakhs rupees’. This also brought the word Naulakha into common use to signify something precious. The Lahore Fort was built in 1566 under the rule of Mughal emperor Akbar the Great on the location of an earlier mud-fort. The solid brick masonry complex was later extended and modified by subsequent emperors. Naulakha Pavilion is among the buildings that were erected or reconstructed between 1628 and 1634 under Shah Jahan’s rule. Due to his personal interest in the design and construction, Shah Jahan’s architectural traditions manifest distinctive symmetry and hierarchical accents. Naulakha Pavilion is part of the Shah Burj block in the northwest section of the fort that was actually built by his predecessor Jahangir. In 1927, the building was listed by the Department of Archaeology of British India. In 1975, it was listed as a protected monument under the Antiquities Act by Pakistan’s Department of Archaeology, whereas in 1981, as part of the larger Lahore Fort Complex, it became inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More recently, the building and its materials have started showing signs of damage and discolouration due to the air pollution. The pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and other emissions, have already affected the white marble of the nearby Sheesh Mahal in the Lahore Fort Complex. The pavilion is rectangular in shape, situated in the west of Sheesh Mahal, and is prominent because of its centrally arched and extraordinarily curved roof. This uniq… More:

The official Visitor to the school is HRH Prince Michael of Kent. Colfe’s is one of the oldest schools in London. The parish priest of Lewisham taught the local children from the time of Richard Walker’s chantry, founded in 1494, until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. Rev. John Glyn re-established the school in 1568 and it was granted a Charter by Elizabeth I in 1574. Abraham Colfe became a Governor in 1613 and the school was re-founded bearing his name in 1652. Colfe declared that the aim of the school was to provide an education for the boys from “the hundred of Blackheath”. He invited the Leathersellers’ Company, one of London’s livery companies, to be the trustee of his will. Links between the school and the Leathersellers remain strong. The school was originally built around Colfe’s house with an entrance in Lewisham Hill. The site was progressively developed and extended, until 1890 when it was completely re-built on the same site with its entrance now in Granville Park. During the Second World War the school was first evacuated to Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and then to Frome in Sommerset. A period of inactivity on the Western front led about 100 boys to return to London, so the school was spilt for a few years. In 1944 a V2 (Flying bomb) aimed at Lewisham Railway junction almost totally destroyed the school. At the end of the War with no school buildings and the pupil role having halved it was uncertain if the school would continue. In London the school was split between two sites – Beacon Road School in Hither Green and Ennersdale Road School, about … More:

Excerpt: A French invasion of Great Britain was planned to take place in 1759 during the Seven Years’ War, but due to various factors including naval defeats at the Battle of Lagos and the Battle of Quiberon Bay was never launched. The French planned to land 100,000 French soldiers in Britain to end British involvement in the war. The invasion was one of several abandoned attempts during the eighteenth century to invade the British Isles. Fighting broke out between France and Britain in 1754, but war was only formally declared in 1756 when France went to war with a British ally, Prussia. From 1757 the British government was dominated by William Pitt, who orchestrated a series of British military expeditions to attack French colonies such as Senegal, Martinique, and French Canada. Pitt saw the war in Europe primarily as a holding action, which allowed Britain to make gains on France around the world. French strategy was entirely the opposite. The French concentrated the bulk of their efforts on Continental Europe and neglected the colonial sphere. By late 1758 they had made numerous advances against the Prussians, who they believed were only kept from collapse by British support. The Duc de Choiseul was the principal author of the invasion plan, with which he hoped to end the war against Britain with a single masterstroke. The invasion was planned by the Duc de Choiseul who became French foreign minister in December 1758 and effectively served as Prime Minister during the period of the mooted invasion. He wanted to launch a bold initiative that would knock Britain out of the war with one stroke. French pride had been stung the previous year by the ease with which the British had captured Louisbourg and launched amphibious raids on the French coast dur… More:
