“Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” And who hasn’t heard this whimsical opening line? I know you want to say it—those two little words. Go ahead; scream it, “SpongeBob SquarePants!!!” Most of the country and a large part of the world are very familiar with everyone’s favorite sea dwelling cartoon character due to his zealous optimism and his overwhelming annoyance factor. SpongeBob mania has spread across the nation for ten years as of July 2009, and there is no telling when it will end! SpongeBob SquarePants is the biggest cartoon to ever come from Nickelodeon, overcoming all competitors, including dare I say, “Ren and Stimpy”? No wonder he always has that bucktoothed grin pasted on that rosy cheeked face, and this year there have been many festivities planned to celebrate this momentous occasion.

To commemorate SpongeBob’s anniversary there has already been a recording of a SpongeBob episode in front of a live audience at the Sundance Film festival in Utah this year, and in April there was a special episode featuring the voice of Johnny Depp as a famous yet mystical surfer dude named JKL from whom the guys (SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidworth) need to Learn How to surf to find their way back home. Lastly, there will be the first feature length SpongeBob documentary to broadcast on MTV sometime in 2009. To say the least there will more than likely be plenty of people dressing up in giant, yellow costumes or doctoring up SpongeBob cartoons on official Nickelodeon business or to try to take advantage of this year’s historical events and take their place in “YouTube Stardom” by posting a bunch of craziness online. However, viewers beware; you never know how inappropriate such video posts will be. (Yikes!)

Of course what this means is that, following all the fame and popularity, SpongeBob has made himself available via every medium imaginable. You can find SpongeBob at home on one of your favorite episodes of the original cartoon on the television, watch him in his movie on DVD, buy his toys and merchandise (Woo Hoo! Coloring Books!), take your family to his theme park, check out his cool downloads and blogs, play SpongeBob songs on Rock Band DLC, or play any number of SpongeBob games on your favorite console (including LeapFrog for the youngling) or, of course, online.

Online SpongeBob games are the most abundant and vary a whole lot in game play. You can make your way through musical mazes before you run out of gas, tickle SpongeBob across the geyser infested ocean floor with a pink feather duster, build ginormous snowballs, or choose a character and fight in a 2-D arena. There are also games that clone other classic online and console games by replacing the original themes and sceneries with SpongeBob themes and Bikini Bottom sceneries. Whatever SpongeBob game you choose, these games promise simple game play for all ages, colorful underwater graphics, and cameo appearances from your favorite SpongeBob characters like Patrick, Gary, and Sandy Cheeks.

So whether you want to unwind, compete, beat your best score, annoy yourself, or simply waste some time on the web, SpongeBob games seem to be the best means to variety and cheep, senseless fun for the whole family. Who knows what the next ten years will bring for all those millions of SpongeBob fans around the globe, but I’m sure that we will see much more of this spongy square-like icon in many more episodes, silly videogames, feature length movies and documentaries, amusement part rides and coloring books. Players take the roles of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, solving puzzles, fighting villains and finding objects. Players encounter characters such as Mr. Poe, Uncle Monty and Aunt Josephine, along with villains such as Count Olaf, the hook-handed man, the white-faced women, and the bald man with the long nose. The core gameplay consists of elements of a platformer, a puzzle game, and a third-person shooter.
